Diversity Scholarship / Fellowship Applications Winter 2016

Postby tanouye » Tue Dec 08, 2015 5:21 pm

Hello,

This page is for information and questions about the UCB Training Center NYC diversity scholarship and fellowships.
Applications are available here:
https://newyork.ucbtrainingcenter.com/diversity
Due by 11:59pm, January 5.

We are adding something new this winter. In addition to our Diversity Scholarships, which are unchanged, we are adding Diversity Fellowships. These offer all the benefits of a scholarship, but without the financial element. These are in response to some students who expressed a desire to participate more in the diversity scholarship program but did not have financial need and did not want to take scholarships away from applicants with greater financial need. Student should only apply for fellowships if they feel they do not have financial need at this time and are not applying for a scholarship. (Don't apply for both)
This is a new program so you may have questions about it. Hopefully I can answer them! But it's new, so I may not have all the answers.

Hi,

Would you mind expanding on the non-financial benefits of the diversity program? From my experience and understanding so far, all the benefits exclusive to scholarship recipients have been financial.

Thanks!

There's a few things that can happen, although I can't guarantee all of them.

Sometimes in the past few years, we've offered workshops just to the diversity scholars. It varies depending on teacher schedules and things, but now we would offer those workshops to fellows as well.*

Fellows would be able to register for classes in the same way scholars would, which offers an advantage over the traditional registration process, in which classes fill up very quickly.

Sometimes we have open spaces in a class that is mostly full, but doesn't have quite enough students to permit the instructor to run all the exercises. In those cases, we offer slots in those classes/workshops to diversity scholars for free. We'll be able to offer those to scholars now, too.*

*These usually have a prerequisite, so I can't offer them to the general diversity mailing list, which includes a lot of people who have never taken classes. Most people on the scholarship email list have taken at least one class, starting a few months after the scholarships are awarded.

Hello,

I do not currently live in New York but will be there by the time the scholarship begins. Can I still apply?

Thank you!

Thanks for the answer! I have one more question. I desperately do need the financial benefits of the scholarship but don't qualify to apply this time around because my second class with the summer scholarship ends 3 weeks after the winter application due date. Would I be able to apply for the fellowship to stay in the program even though I do need the scholarship, I just don't qualify right now?

You should wait until you live here to apply, so in the summer application window.

That would be a good use of the fellowship, so yes, apply for that one.

Hi Erik,

Under "Should I Apply?" the fellowship application has the same requirements as the scholarship stating I need to have finished all my scholarship credits before January 5th. I'm assuming this was a typo since you stated I was eligible to apply?

Thanks so much,

I'm very interested in applying for the fellowship but found out about it once I was out of the country. I'll be back on the 15th but will obviously not be able to see a show before the deadline. I've gone to Ucb shows before but not since November of last year.

Would it be possible to apply and then just see a show when I'm back in New York or is that a deal breaker?

Thanks
