The UCBT Podcast for the week of 1/24 is up now! Get it at http://www.ucbcomedy.com/podcasts/ucbtny or on iTunes.

This week, Will and I discussed some issues of stage etiquette. Agree? Disagree? Got something about this that we didn't bring up? Discuss it here!

First off, thanks for the shout-out.

Brought up in a discussion John, Rachael Mason, and I had: you should NEVER chew gum on stage.

I'm certainly no fan of shorts on stage.... I don't really care too much about water bottles.

That's right, I realized when we talked about it in person that I forgot to mention chewing gum on stage. Definitely a weird thing to think it's okay to do in an improv show.

Chewing gum would be terrible! People do that! I'm a slob and even I would know better.

Worse than chewing gum:
having a meal delivered to you during your show.
catching up on your reading during a show
announcing "I farted" from the backline
hitting on an audience member from the backline
getting a hair cut during the show

Will, you don't think there's some aspect of the audience that only comes to an improv show to be hit on? I like to tell myself that they all do.

It's not the hitting on that bothers me, it's doing it from the backline. You're upstaging someone else's scene, you see.

If you're IN a scene it's completely appropriate to turn your attention to audience members in order to proposition them.
