Train to Learn Audio-Description for Blind Theatergoers

Postby [HAI] » Wed Sep 10, 2014 1:30 pm

Healing Arts Initiative (HAI) is auditioning volunteer audio describers for Describe!, a program which arranges live audio description of Broadway and Off-Broadway shows for blind and visually impaired theatergoers. Recent Describe! shows include A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder, Pippin, Cabaret, Kinky Boots, and shows at Primary Stages and the New Victory Theater.

Candidates must have a pleasant speaking voice with excellent diction and vocabulary, a love of theatre, and extreme attention to detail. The ability to commit to three described shows throughout the year is a must; responsibilities for describing a show include attending two performances of the show within two weeks prior to the description date, and a commitment to being punctual and dependable.

Candidates must be available to attend each three-hour training session occurring on 10/30 at 6:30pm, 11/3 at 6:30pm and 11/15 at 10am. To arrange for an audition, please send an email that summarizes your background, including any previous volunteer activities, as well as a statement that explains your interest in the program to mdaniels@hainyc.org with “Describe! Audition” in the subject line. No phone calls, please.

For 45+ years, HAI has inspired healing, growth, and learning, through engagement in the arts for the culturally underserved. As the first organization to provide this live description for New York audiences, HAI has been helping blind and visually impaired individuals to enjoy live theater performances since 1988.
