I am excited to announce Maude Team submissions and auditions! 

Maude Teams consist of Six (6) Writers & Six (6) Actors (though sometimes some members of the team are both Writers & Actors). The Actors are the primary cast for each monthly Maude Night performance and work with the Writers in much the same way the cast of Saturday Night Live work with the writers on that show - meaning show content will come from the writers alone as well as writers working with actors. A Director oversees the writing and production of the team and the monthly show. All members of the team are responsible for the success of the monthly show.


THE TEAM

--Maude Teams should be working both individually and as a team to create quality sketch comedy. 

--The goal of Maude Night is NOT to create a polished, fully-formed sketch show each month. Rather, the goal is to create a professionally performed sketch review of the best material being created by the team each month. Maude Teams should always have sketches being prepared for that month's show and sketches "in the pipeline" for future shows. Maude Night shows may also feature sketches already seen on MaudeNight that have been substantially revised or developed.



THE SHOW

--Each Maude Team will create one show every month.

--Each Maude Night show should last approximately thirty (30) minutes. 

--The show will consist of new material and also, potentially, rewritten material. ("New Material" means material that has not been performed on Maude Night prior to this show. "Rewritten Material" means material that has already been performed on Maude Night and has been substantially rewritten since that performance.)

--Maude Night shows will consist of the BEST material created, as decided by the Director. Writers are NOT guaranteed their material will be performed. Actors are NOT guaranteed that they will be featured every month. These rules are made in an effort to emulate, on a much smaller, more supportive scale, the competitive and professional atmosphere of televisions shows like "Conan" and "SNL."

--The Actor Ensemble will be the primary cast for all shows. However, other actors can be added to this cast as the material dictates. All casting decisions will be approved by the team's Director.



SCHEDULE

--Maude Teams will meet at least once per week for Writers Room sessions and/or Rehearsals. Actors may not be needed at every meeting, however that should be at the discretion of the Director of the team since actors may be wanted for table reads, sketch development, etc. (See "Responsibilities" below.) Actors should plan to be at EVERY meeting unless otherwise notified.

--Additional time may be required the week of the team's Maude Night performance, including potential late-night tech rehearsals. 



RESPONSIBILITIES

WRITERS will be responsible for the following:

--Attend all Maude Team meetings and rehearsals

--Consistently produce new material. That means at least one (1) new sketch every week. Even the week of the Maude Night performance, writers should still be producing new material for future shows.

--Rewrites are also required based on the Director's guidance and audience response.

--Provide feedback on other teammates' material and actively participate in the Writer's Room

--Once a sketch is approved for the show by the Director, the Writer should cast the sketch (from that team's Actor Ensemble), block and rehearse the sketch with the actors, and coordinate all necessary props, set pieces, etc. The Director will provide guidance on these tasks, and these steps should be coordinated with the Director, but the Writer will be required to take on the bulk of responsibility for producing their sketch.

--Writers are ultimately responsible for their material and the performance of their material. Writers should NOT depend on their Director to do this for them.

--All material created by the Writer belongs to them, even if you've accepted input from other Writers, Actors, and/or the Director. Dual or Multiple authorship should only be addressed when more than one person actively created the idea for the sketch and/or actually, hands-on wrote/re-wrote the sketch (e.g., a sketch built around a character created by one of the actors on the team).

--All members of the team are responsible for helping promote the show.

--Maude Team members will be expected to pay their directors for their time in weekly meetings/rehearsals (this should be handled in the same way (logistically and financially) that improv teams pay their coaches). Team directors must be approved by the UCBT Artistic Director.




ACTORS will be responsible for the following:

--Attend all meetings and rehearsals as required by the Director

--Learn all material in a timely and reasonable manner. Your job is to make this material as good as it can be and to give a polished, professional performance.

--You are encouraged to work with Writers on any ideas for characters, etc. that you may have. However, you should not be writing alone or with other actors for the shows.

--All members of the team are responsible for helping promote the show.

--Maude Team members will be expected to pay their directors for their time in weekly meetings/rehearsals (this should be handled in the same way (logistically and financially) that improv teams pay their coaches. As Actors, you may not be at every meeting, but you may be asked to pay your part of the director's fee for those meetings. Teams will select their directors from a pre-approved list.



WRITER/ACTORS will be responsible for the following:

--All Writer responsibilities

--All Actor responsibilities

--Writer/Actors may cast themselves in their sketches, however, they must be willing to accept guidance on casting from the Director and they should understand that insisting on casting themselves could affect whether or not their material is included in the monthly show. Also, Writer/Actors should not solely be creating material for themselves. They are expected to operate as a Writer in the same way the other Writers operate with the additional responsibility of being an Actor on the team.




REQUIREMENTS / HOW TO SUBMIT

WRITERS

--If you are interested in being considered to be a WRITER for a Maude Team, you must be APPROVED for Advanced Study Writing classes. This means you have not only completed UCBT Sketch 201, you have also applied for and been approved for Advanced Study. If you're not sure you are eligible, email classes@ucbcomedy.com (email this address rather than asking the AD).

--If you are not willing/able to comply with the above responsibilities - DO NOT SUBMIT TO BE ON A MAUDE TEAM.

--Participation on a Maude Team should be your PRIORITY. If you are not able to commit at that level - DO NOT SUBMIT TO BE ON A MAUDE TEAM. I want to reiterate - I am interested in creating opportunities for writers, actors, and directors who really want to write, perform, and direct comedy at a high level of quality and professionalism. If you are one of those people, I hope you'll submit.

--If you miss more than two (2) meetings/rehearsals in a row, miss meetings/rehearsals on a regular basis, or fail to write/produce the required quantity of work - you will be replaced on your team. Attendance and full participation are important, necessary, and required. Commitments at other theatres, or at UCBT (including Harold or Beta Teams), or elsewhere, are NOT excuses for missing meetings, rehearsals, and/or shows.

--It is perfectly acceptable to be on a Maude Team, Harold Team, and Beta Team at the same time - but you must be able to meet the commitments of all teams without conflict.

--If you are interested in being considered to be a WRITER on a Maude Team, your submission should consist of three (3) completed sketches. Each sketch should include a title and your name. Each sketch should be no more than 5 pages. Show us your best stuff. Your submission should also include a cover page telling us what position you're submitting for and why you should be included on a Maude Team.

--All three sketches should be submitted in one (1) manila envelope with your name, phone, email address, and sketch teacher(s) listed on the outside.

--Submissions should be dropped off at the UCBT Theatre Training Center (145 W. 30th St, 4th Fl). There will be a box behind the front desk labeled "MAUDE NIGHT - WRITERS" to hold submissions.

--We will begin accepting submissions on Monday November 21st.

--The submission deadline is THURSDAY DECEMBER 1st by 10pm.



ACTORS

--You do not need to have improv experience to be considered to be an ACTOR for a Maude Team. However, you should have performance experience of some kind (UCBT, non-UCBT, stage, or film).

--If you are not willing/able to comply with the above responsibilities - DO NOT SUBMIT TO BE ON A MAUDE TEAM.

--Participation on a Maude Team should be your PRIORITY. If you are not able to commit at that level - DO NOT SUBMIT TO BE ON A MAUDE TEAM. I want to reiterate - I am interested in creating opportunities for writers, actors, and directors who really want to write, perform, and direct comedy at a high level of quality and professionalism. If you are one of those people, I hope you'll submit.

Attendance and full participation are important, necessary, and required. Commitments at other theatres, at UCBT (including Harold Teams), or elsewhere, are NOT excuses for missing meetings, rehearsals, and/or shows.

--It is perfectly acceptable to be on a Maude Team, Harold Team, and Beta Team at the same time - but you must be able to meet the commitments of all teams without conflict.

--If you are interested in being considered to be an ACTOR on a Maude Team, you should drop off a headshot and resume at the UCBT Theatre Training Center (145 W. 30th St, 4th Fl). There will be a box behind the front desk labeled "MAUDE NIGHT - ACTORS" to hold submissions. Make sure your headshot includes your name, phone, and email address.

--We will begin accepting submissions on Monday November 21st.

--Auditions will be three (3) minutes. In that time, you should show us your best characters, impressions, accents, skills, etc. It is completely up to you how you choose to impress us. The best auditions shows us a variety of things that showcase both a sense of your unique performance abilities and your sense of humor.

--The Headshot/Resume submission deadline is THURSDAY, DECEMBER 1st by 10pm.

--Selected Actors will be invited to audition based on their headshot/resume. Invited Auditions will be held on SATURDAY DECEMBER 10th. If you are selected to audition, you will be notified by Wednesday December 7th.



WRITER/ACTORS

--If you are interested in being a WRITER/ACTOR for a Maude Team, you must meet the above requirements of BOTH the Writers and the Actors, and you should follow the submission guidelines for BOTH the Writers and the Actors. However, you should note on your Writer's Packet and Headshot that you are submitting as a Writer/Actor. IF YOU DO NOT NOTE THIS, YOU WILL NOT BE CONSIDERED AS A WRITER/ACTOR.

--You should also note on your submissions if you are willing to be on a Maude Team as ONLY a Writer or an Actor, in case you are not selected for both. Do not say you are willing to do this if you are not. It will not be held against you either way.
