Writing for UCB

Postby ShaliniDua » Mon Jul 18, 2011 1:49 pm

Can someone please explain the process for someone interested in being on one of the writing teams at UCB?

- do we need to come in with our own team or is there a process to join an exisiting team?

- if there is the possibility to join an existing writing team, how does one go about it?

Thank you in advance.

Teams that perform on Monday nights are house teams called Maude Teams. The writers took writing classes here and auditioned and were placed on teams. More info can be found here: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=5252&p=7961&hilit=maude+team#p7961

I cannot tell you the next time a Maude audition will happen, but it will probably not be for a while... that's not my department, anywho.

Any other sketch show happening at UCB are written by people inside or outside the community and auditioned the show as a SPANK (which is a tryout to get a run at UCB). Info about SPANK is below, quoted from the New York UCB FAQ:

"SPANKS are booked one month in advance. If you have a sketch show or one-person show and you are interested in a SPANK slot you should submit:

A script or DVD
Title of show
Logline (What's the hook? Why is it funny? And why would we think it will be funny before we see it?)
Cast list
Name of director
Shows should not exceed 35 minutes in length — NO EXCEPTIONS. (30 minutes is preferable)

Your submission must be received by the 10th of the month. The Artistic Director will get back to you by the 20th to let you know if your show has been selected and what your SPANK date is for the following month. So, for instance, if you're interested in an April SPANK slot, submit by March 10th.

SPANK should not be used to workshop new shows, it is an audition for a run at the UCB Theatre. Shows should be completed, rehearsed, and ready to be seen by the Artistic Director for a potential run at the UCB Theatre. The logline will be very important in our selection criteria for Spank slots.

Spank submissions should be mailed (or hand delivered) to:

John Frusciante
Artistic Associate
UCB Theatre
145 W. 30th Street
4th Floor
NYC 10001

You can also email them to john@ucbcomedy.com.

Please remember to include your e-mail and phone contact information."
