***THIS THREAD HAS BEEN LOCKED! PLEASE EMAIL laharold@ucbcomedy.com WITH ANY ADDITIONAL QUESTIONS. THANK YOU AND GOOD LUCK!***

Announcing Fall 2019 auditions for UCBTLA’s Harold and Mess Hall Teams!

Please read this in its entirety. All pertinent information should be answered below, so read thoroughly before asking questions.

***First round auditions will be held Thursday 9/5, Friday 9/6, Saturday 9/7, and Sunday 9/8, and callbacks will be held on Tuesday 9/10, Wednesday 9/11 and Thursday 9/12. These are the only audition and callback dates.***

***Only questions answered by the Artistic Director or Artistic Assistant on this thread will be considered official answers.***

***Please do not ask questions about eligibility or auditions on Facebook groups, via email, or to any UCB Theatre or Training Center employees.***

IN SIGNING UP FOR A HAROLD / MESS HALL TEAM AUDITION YOU AGREE TO THE FOLLOWING UCB TEAM EXPECTATIONS:

Harold and Mess Hall Teams perform the improv form known as the Harold. Team members must show an understanding of the Harold and a dedication to using the Harold structure as a tool in creating improvised comedy.

Harold and Mess Hall Teams are expected to rehearse as needed in order to improve and maintain the quality of performances.

Harold and Mess Hall Teams must be a priority for team members. This is demonstrated by attending rehearsals and performances. Team members with a pattern of poor attendance or lateness will be removed.

Harold and Mess Hall Teams will be assigned an initial coach by the UCBTLA Artistic Director, but are free to switch coaches at any point pending the approval of the Artistic Director. Harold and Mess Hall Team members are typically expected to compensate the coach a reasonable coaching fee. This fee is set by a discussion between the coach and the team.

Every Harold and Mess Hall Team member is expected to boldly bring their unique voice and sense of humor to shows.

As a team member, you are expected to perform at a high level and demonstrate commitment to improving, but you are NOT expected to be perfect. Team members must show they are open to notes from their coach and the Artistic Director and be willing to work at implementing those notes.

Harold and Mess Hall Team members are expected to continuously develop their comedic voice through opportunities at UCBTLA, including (but not limited to) sketch shows, bit shows, specialty improv shows, Spanks and stand-up. Team members are encouraged to find new ways to express their unique comedic voice.

Mess Hall Teams perform the Harold in the Inner Sanctum on Sunday nights. The express purpose of Mess Hall Teams is to provide promising improvisors a chance to practice the Harold in front of an audience. This round of Mess Hall Teams will exist for six months and will NOT include a musical team.

If you agree with these expectations, read on!

WHERE ARE AUDITIONS?

Auditions will be held in the Inner Sanctum at UCB Sunset -- 5419 Sunset Blvd.

WHO IS ELIGIBLE?

Harold and Mess Hall Teams will be cast from the same audition. Eligibility is the same for both Harold and Mess Hall Teams. All auditioners will be auditioning for Harold Teams, but you can opt out of Mess Hall consideration and it will not affect your eligibility for a Harold Team.

Current and former Mess Hall Team members ARE eligible to be placed on a Harold Team or a NEW Mess Hall Team.

Everyone meeting at least ONE of the following four requirements will receive an audition:

1) You were accepted in the UCB Advanced Study Improv Program before January 25, 2018 and have taken any multi-week improv course at the UCB Training Center in LA/NY that had/has its final class between August 31, 2018 and October 1, 2019.

-OR-

2) You have been accepted into UCB Academy and have taken any multi-week improv course at the UCB Training Center in LA/NY that had/has its final class between August 31, 2018 and October 1, 2019.

-OR-

3) You have been a member of a Harold Team, Maude Team or Characters Welcome and have taken a multi-week improv course at the UCB Training Center in LA/NY that had/has its final class between August 31, 2017 and October 1, 2019.

-OR-

4) Were on a Mess Hall Team since October 2018 and have completed Improv 401 at UCB.

ELIGIBILITY EXCEPTIONS (DEADLINE: SUNDAY, AUGUST 18TH)
Exceptions will be granted to the above eligibility on a limited basis -- no one should expect to get an exception.

Below is a link to a separate form for those seeking exceptions to the above eligibility requirements. This includes anyone accepted into UCB Advanced Study after January 25, 2018. You can find the exception form here: https://forms.gle/8jS1ou5Zi5LuGh6u7

Exceptions will be granted based on space available. If you are granted an exception, you will receive an email with your audition time.

The exception request form will be open until 11:59pm, Sunday, August 18th.

AUDITION SPECIFICS

-PLEASE ARRIVE THIRTY MINUTES PRIOR TO YOUR SCHEDULED AUDITION TIME.

-You must bring a headshot and resume STAPLED, NOT CLIPPED, together. If you do not have a headshot, bring a recent photo that clearly shows your face.

-There will be a room to warm-up with your audition group. Current Harold Team members will run the warm-up.

-On the day of the audition, improvisers will be seen every 20 minutes in groups of 8.

First round auditions will last about 20 minutes and follow this format:
-A suggestion.
-A short, true personal monologue off a suggestion
-Monologists are encouraged to tell stories from their adult life, rather than childhood anecdotes. Monologists will be asked to stop at 60 seconds.
-Four two-person FIRST BEATS.
-Four SECOND BEATS. Second beats should be initiated by the improvisors who were in the first beat -- both improvisers from the first beat should step out for the second beat and either improviser can speak first.
-No groups games, but second beats should have an emphasis on “on-game” group support.
-We will edit all scenes.

Callbacks will consist of a Harold.

Harold and Mess Hall Teams are formed at the discretion of the UCBTLA Artistic Director in consultation with the Harold Committee, a collection of experienced coaches, teachers and performers who love improv.

Hello,
I have submitted an exception request to audition. Is there anything else I should do at this time? Should I reach out to my references to let them know someone may be in contact with them?

Thanks

Apologies if this question has been answered in prior years, but I'm wondering if taking several game workshop classes at UCB counts as a 'multi-week course' for eligibility? And if so does that count for Maude auditions as well? Thank you.

ANSWER: One-off classes don't count as multi-week courses, but be sure to mention that you've taken those workshops if you're applying for an eligibility exception.

The eligibility exception form says, "If you were accepted into Advanced Study after Jan 25th 2018, please provide the name of your most recent Improv 401 teacher."

What qualifies someone to be accepted into Advanced Study? Is it simply the graduation of 401 or do you have to have enrolled in an Advanced Study class?

I just graduated 401 so I wasn't sure if I should answer that question or the question after it on the form that asks for further explanation.

Thanks!

I am a diversity scholarship recipient and just completed Improv 401. My coach was great and gave us all the info we needed to prepare to audition for Harold and Mess Hall teams. I, however, lost track of time and missed the exemption form that was due on 8/18. After speaking with my classmates, they suggested I reach out to you for the possibility of still submitting answers to the form.

I totally understand if that can not be done and there is a strict policy in place. This is 100% my mistake as I should have had my hand on the trigger for this deadline. However, I really enjoyed the Improv program and have been encouraged by classmates and former coaches to throw my name in the ring for a Harold or Mess Hall team. Improv has been a great opportunity and outlet in my life and I would love to find a way to continue performing.

Is there any exception or possibility that I can submit the form even though I am a few days late?

Thank you for your time and I look forward to hearing from you soon.

If I am only available on 9/5 can I still audition and be considered for Harold Night and/or Mess Hall knowing I won't be available for callbacks?
