Please read this in its entirety. All pertinent information should be answered below, so read thoroughly before asking questions.

***If you are submitting to be a writer we want three sketches and five pitches. If you are submitting to be an actor we want a 2 minute video of your best characters.***

***Only questions answered by the Artistic Director or Artistic Manager on boards.ucbcomedy.com will be considered official answers.***

***Please do not ask questions about eligibility or auditions on Facebook groups, via email, or to any UCB Theatre or Training Center employees.***

***Owing to the high volume of submissions we receive, we cannot offer individual feedback on submissions.***

***SUBMISSION REQUIREMENT EXCEPTION POLICY -- PLEASE READ***
If you do not fulfill the below requirements but you still wish to submit/audition, you may fill out the Exception Request Form (https://forms.gle/JPCiCg8rACDNjMYE8). The deadline to fill out the Exception Request Form is 11:59pm December 29, 2019. If you are granted an exception, you will be notified by January 3, 2020 and, at that point, you can fill out the relevant submission form(s). Requests for exceptions in any other form (via email, boards.ucbcomedy.com, in person, etc.) will not be accepted.

Please do not fill out the regular submission form(s) unless/until you've been granted an exception. Filling out those forms before you've been granted an exception will jeopardize your chances of being on UCB house teams in the future.

Submissions for Actors will be accepted until 11:59pm on Monday, January 6th, 2020.

Submissions for Writers will be accepted until 11:59pm on Monday, January 6th, 2020.

We cannot accept any submissions after the deadline, so spread the word that submissions are now open and good luck!

WHAT ARE MAUDE TEAMS?

Maude Teams are UCB’s house sketch comedy teams. They are formed and overseen by the Artistic Director. Maude Teams generally consist of six writers, six actors, and a director who oversees the writing and production of a monthly sketch show.

Maude Night is every Wednesday at 8:30pm at UCB Sunset. Maude shows are 25-30 minutes and consist of new material written specifically for Maude Night.

Maude Teams are formed at the discretion of the UCBTLA Artistic Director in consultation with the Maude Committee, a collection of experienced directors, coaches, teachers and performers who love sketch comedy.

IN SUBMITTING TO BE A MAUDE WRITER AND/OR ACTOR, YOU AGREE TO THE FOLLOWING UCB MAUDE TEAM EXPECTATIONS:

Maude Teams are expected to put up shows featuring polished, funny, UCB-style, game-based sketch comedy.

Maude Teams must be a priority for team members. This is demonstrated by attending rehearsals and performances. Team members with a pattern of poor attendance or lateness will be removed. Commitments with other UCB house teams (Harold/Characters Welcome) or at other theatres are NOT excuses for missing meetings, rehearsals, or shows.

Maude Teams generally meet twice a week for writers meetings and rehearsals. A typical Maude schedule looks like this: Pitch Meeting, 2 Writers Meetings, 1 Read Through, 3 Rehearsals, 1 Tech Rehearsal, The Show. Additional time may be required, this is up to the individual team.

Maude Teams perform once a month on Wednesday at 8:30pm in the UCB Sunset theater.

Maude tech rehearsals are always on the Wednesday of your show, between 3pm and 6pm, depending on when you are up on show night (the first team performing that night will have tech 3pm-4:30pm, the second team will have 4:30pm-6pm).

Maude Teams will be assigned a director by the UCBTLA Artistic Director. Directors will be periodically rotated to expose team members to a variety of viewpoints. Team input will be considered in director assignment. Maude Team members compensate the director a reasonable coaching fee. This fee is set by a discussion between the director and the team.

Team Members are responsible for promotion of the show and are expected to think beyond Instagram posts.

Every Maude Team member is expected to boldly bring their unique voice and sense of humor to shows.

As a team member, you are expected to perform at a high level and demonstrate commitment to improving, but you are NOT expected to be perfect. Team members must show they are open to notes from their director and the Artistic Director and be willing to work at implementing those notes.

Maude Team members are expected to continuously develop their comedic voice through opportunities at UCB, including, but not limited to, sketch shows, bit shows, Not Too Shabby, Spanks and stand-up. Team members are encouraged to find new ways to express their unique comedic voice.

Writers are not guaranteed to have a sketch in every show and actors are not guaranteed to be featured every month. On months where actors and writers are “light,” they are expected to support their team in any way that they can.

WRITER EXPECTATIONS

Writers must attend all Maude Team meetings, rehearsals, and shows. Writers are strongly encouraged to attend tech rehearsal, but are not expected to take time off from paid work to attend.

Writers must produce a minimum of one new sketch every week.

Writers must rewrite sketches based on feedback from writers meetings.

Writers must provide constructive feedback on other teammates' material and be an active participant in the writers' room.

Writers are the “producer” of their sketch, and responsible for coordinating all necessary props, costumes and set pieces that their sketch requires.

Material created by the writer belongs to them, even if they have accepted input from other writers, actors or the director.

Dual or multi authorship should only be addressed when more than one person actively created the idea or wrote/re-wrote the sketch. (e.g. if an actor creates a character and a sketch is written around that character).

ACTOR EXPECTATIONS

The following are mandatory for actors to attend: Pitch Meeting, Read Through, Rehearsals, Show. Actors are strongly encouraged to attend tech rehearsal, but are not expected to take time off from paid work to attend.

It is up to the individual team if Writers Meetings are mandatory for the actor, so actors should be prepared to attend the same amount of meetings as writers (all).

Actors must have a minimum of one character to pitch for themselves at each pitch meeting. There is no guarantee that your character will be chosen.

Actors must memorize lines no later than the second rehearsal. An actor’s job is to give a polished professional performance, which is impossible to do if you are memorizing lines the day of the show.

Actors will work with writers on character ideas. Actors will not write alone or with other actors.

If you agree with these expectations, read on!

HOW TO SUBMIT

NOTE: You may submit to be a Maude writer and also audition to be a Maude actor. Submitting as a writer does not disqualify you from auditioning as an actor, or vice-versa. Nor does it gain you any advantage in either aspect. Please note that writers and actors will be evaluated separately, and that no writer/performer hybrid positions are guaranteed.

CURRENT MAUDE WRITERS AND ACTORS: If you are currently a writer, you are welcome to audition to be an actor. The same goes for actors who wish to submit as a writer.
