2015 UCB-LA Harold / Mess Hall Auditions

Postby MikeStill » Mon Aug 10, 2015 6:42 pm

I’m excited to announce Fall 2015 auditions for UCB-LA’s Harold and Mess Hall Teams!

Our house teams are the heart of the Upright Citizens Brigade Theatre. We take the development of our teams seriously, and pride ourselves in fostering a nurturing creative environment that challenges our performers to create comedy that will be remembered billions of years past the heat death of the universe.

-Mike Still, Artistic Director, UCB-LA

***First round auditions will be held 9/8, 9/9, 9/10, 9/11, 9/14, 9/15 and callbacks will be held on 9/19 and 9/20. These are the only audition dates.***

***Everything should be answered below, so read thoroughly before asking questions.***

***Only questions answered by the Artistic Director or Artistic Associate on this thread will be considered official answers.***

***Please do not ask questions about eligibility or auditions on Facebook groups, via email, or to any UCB Theatre or Training Center employees.***

IN SIGNING UP FOR A HAROLD / MESS HALL TEAM AUDITION YOU AGREE TO THE FOLLOWING UCB TEAM EXPECTATIONS:

Harold and Mess Hall Teams perform the improv form known as the Harold. Team members must show an understanding of the Harold and a dedication to using the Harold structure as a tool in creating improvised comedy.

Harold and Mess Hall Teams are formed at the discretion of the UCB-LA Artistic Director in consultation with the Harold Committee, a collection of coaches, teachers and performers who love improv.

You are expected to treat your team members like “geniuses, poets and artists.” There is a direct correlation between team support and team success -- behavior that disrupts this environment will not be tolerated.

Harold and Mess Hall Teams must rehearse at least once a week.

Harold and Mess Hall Teams must be a priority for team members. This is demonstrated by attending rehearsals and performances. Team members with a pattern of poor attendance or lateness will be removed.

Harold and Mess Hall Teams will be assigned a coach by the UCB-LA Artistic Director. Coaches will be periodically rotated to expose team members to a variety of viewpoints. Team input will be considered in coach assignment.

Harold and Mess Hall Team members must compensate the coach a reasonable coaching fee. This fee is set by a discussion between the coach and the team.

Harold and Mess Hall Team members are expected to boldly bring his or her unique voice and sense of humor to their shows.

Mess Hall Teams are teams created by the UCB that perform the Harold in the Inner Sanctum on Sunday Nights. The purpose of Mess Hall Teams is to provide promising improvisors a chance to practice the Harold in front of an audience. This round of Mess Hall Teams will exist for six months.

As a team member, you are expected to perform at a high level and demonstrate commitment to improving, but you are NOT expected to be perfect. Mistakes often drive improvisation, so don’t be afraid to make one. Don’t waste your time on a team being afraid, it’s very hard to be funny if you aren’t having fun. UCB-LA wants you to succeed!

Notes are not criticism. As such, team members must show they are open to notes from their coach and the Artistic Director and willing to work at implementing those notes.

UCB encourages the relationships formed on teams to lead to comedy collaborations that grow beyond UCB’s stages.

Harold and Mess Hall Team members are expected to continuously develop their comedic voice through opportunities at UCB, including, but not limited to, sketch shows, bit shows, specialty improv shows, Spanks and stand-up. Team members are encouraged to find new ways to express their unique comedic voice.

No team last forever--and when teams go away, it’s not personal. Keep creating.

If you agree with these expectations, read on!

-Mike Still, Artistic Director, UCB-LA

Does the "multi-week improv class" mean any class or does it have to be an advanced study class? Thanks!

How much are the chances of getting an audition slot decreased if your only available for the last two days of auditions?

We are asking everyone to be as generous with their ability as they can be. While we will try to accommodate everyone's availability, if you only say "yes" to one audition slot you will be flagged as "possible jerk."

Note: There is no actual "possible jerk" flag, but if everyone only signs up for one audition slot, then the process will break down and the system will grind to a halt. Make it easy for us by signing up for as many audition slots as possible.

Can you explain 'NON-BIT' here? It's not a phrase I've seen before...
